The Goodness of Godly Authority
Pastor Andrew walks through Exodus 20:12, “Honor your father and your mother,” showing that God teaches us to live under His authority first through the family. He explained that children honor parents through obedience, respect, humility, and a willing heart, while recognizing that God remains the ultimate authority. Pastor Andrew also emphasized that honor does not expire when children become adults, though obedience changes as adults establish their own households and care for aging parents. He called parents to exercise authority as a faithful stewardship, with both firmness and tenderness, modeling submission to God rather than using authority selfishly or harshly. He also showed that honoring earthly authority trains people to live wisely under God’s good rule and points toward flourishing and eternal life. Ultimately, Pastor Andrew pointed to Jesus as the perfectly obedient Son who honored His Father and died for rebellious people so they could be welcomed into God’s household by grace.
