The School of the Wilderness (Part 2)

This sermon continues “The School of the Wilderness” by showing how God trains His redeemed people to trust His presence and provision in difficult circumstances. In Exodus 17, Israel’s lack of water exposes their unbelief, but God graciously provides water from the struck rock, ultimately pointing to Christ, the Rock who was struck so sinners could receive living water. When Amalek attacks, God gives Israel victory, teaching that His people must obey and fight faithfully while depending fully on the Lord, their true banner. The sermon also highlights how Moses needed Aaron and Hur to hold up his weary hands, reminding believers that God often sustains His people through the help of others. In Exodus 18, Jethro hears of God’s saving work and rejoices, showing that God’s redemption is meant to become a testimony to the nations. Jethro’s counsel to Moses further demonstrates that even faithful leaders cannot carry every burden alone, and God provides qualified people to share the work. The central message is that the God who is among His people provides what they lack, fights battles they cannot win alone, and gives help for burdens they were never meant to carry by themselves.
