The Mountain of God

In Exodus 19:1-6, we see Israel’s arrival at Mount Sinai, where God brings His redeemed people to Himself and prepares to reveal His holiness and His law. Pastor Andrew explains that Sinai is a major moment in the biblical story, since Israel remains there from Exodus 19 through Numbers 10. He traces the theme of mountains throughout Scripture, beginning with Eden as the mountain-garden where humanity once enjoyed communion with God, and then moving through Ararat, Babel, Moriah, Sinai, Zion, and Calvary. Each mountain shows something about God’s presence, humanity’s sin, and the need for God Himself to provide salvation. At Sinai, the people are warned not to approach the mountain because their sin still separates them from the holy God. But Sinai points forward to Calvary, where Jesus fulfills the law, bears God’s wrath, and opens access to God through His death and resurrection. The sermon ends by calling people not to build their own way to God, like Babel, but to trust in Christ, the One through whom the Lord has provided salvation.
