The Mountain-City of God: From Fear to Grace

Apr 12, 2026    Andrew Ivester

This sermon contrasts two mountains—Mount Sinai and Mount Zion—to illustrate two different ways of approaching God. Mount Sinai represents the old covenant characterized by fear, distance, and the law that exposes sin but cannot save. Mount Zion represents the new covenant in Christ, characterized by grace, welcome, and access to God. Pastor Andrew emphasizes that believers have not come to the mountain of fear (Sinai) but to the mountain of grace (Zion) through Jesus Christ. Through union with Christ, believers already participate in heavenly realities, worshiping alongside angels and the saints who have gone before. The sermon stresses that we cannot approach God on our own merits or righteousness, but only through Jesus, whose blood speaks a better word than Abel's blood—not crying out for judgment, but proclaiming forgiveness and peace. This message encourages believers to persevere through persecution and difficulty by remembering their true citizenship in the heavenly Jerusalem and the sufficiency of Christ's sacrifice.
