The Way of Worship

Sep 27, 2026  •  Andrew Ivester

Pastor Andrew walks through Exodus 20:4–6 and focuses on the second commandment, which forbids worshiping God through images or according to human invention. He explains that while the first commandment asks who we worship, the second asks how we worship, teaching that God alone determines how He should be approached. Because no created image can truly represent the infinite and holy God, idolatry reduces and distorts Him, whether through physical statues or mental versions of God shaped by personal preference. Pastor Andrew emphasizes that true worship must be governed by God’s Word, not by sincerity, emotion, or creativity apart from divine revelation. He also shows that God’s jealousy is an expression of covenant love, because false worship harms His people and shapes future generations. Finally, the sermon points to Jesus Christ as the perfect image of the invisible God, calling believers to worship the God revealed in Scripture and ultimately in His Son.
